Whitney Herbst,
Bass
How old were you when you started playing your instrument?
“Although I played piano and viola from an early age, I didn’t start playing the string bass until I was in junior high school. I quickly fell in love with learning the art of playing double bass and have been playing professionally now since 2013.”
Besides the Bakersfield Symphony, what else do you do for a living?
“I am fortunate to play in several professional musical organizations throughout the central valley. When I am not rehearsing or performing with these groups, I teach private lessons at Bakersfield Music Lessons. Teaching children to love music, and then getting to see them grow into young accomplished musicians, is something I truly enjoy.”
What do you enjoy most about playing with the BSO?
“The BSO is an ensemble of highly accomplished musicians with whom it is truly a pleasure to perform, especially as part of its exceptional bass section. Being born and raised in Bakersfield, I am especially proud of getting to represent my city as a member of its outstanding professional orchestra.”
What is one piece of advice you would give to an aspiring musician?
“Having someone sponsor my chair would mean a great deal to me, for it would be an acknowledgement of the string bass section as the foundation upon which our own BSO creates the beautiful sounds we call music.”
