Julia performs with a Lewis R. Ament Memorial String Quartet Violin.

How old were you when you started playing your instrument?

“I started learning the violin at age 7.”

Besides the Bakersfield Symphony, what else do you do for a living?

“Besides playing with the BSO, I am pleased to teach violin lessons at CSUB and at home. I also enjoy playing in quartets and other chamber music for various local events.”

What do you enjoy most about playing with the BSO? 

“I love getting to know magnificent pieces of art music from the inside, and playing with so many spectacular musicians is a special privilege!”

What is one piece of advice you would give to an aspiring musician? 

“Learning how to listen deeply makes a big difference in one’s practice. Listen to your pitch, to your metronome, to the musicians around you, and keep listening when you’re not playing.”

“I’ve lived in 5 states: Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Connecticut, and California.”

“Growing up, I also played piano, flute, and the organ (briefly).”

“Musical performances have taken me to Mexico, Canada, Germany, Poland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary.”
