Jay Rubottom,
Bass
How old were you when you started playing your instrument?
“I began playing electric bass when I was 14, and learned upright a few years later so I could be part of my school’s music program.”
Besides the Bakersfield Symphony, what else do you do for a living?
“I work as an orchestra musician and music educator across Southern California, performing regularly with many professional symphonies in the area, as well as serving as a double bass coach for several youth orchestras, colleges, and public school music programs. I also teach private students of all ages and ability levels.”
What do you enjoy most about playing with the BSO?
“It’s an honor to get to work with so many truly excellent fellow musicians, and seeing how much pride everyone takes in their work of bringing high-quality symphonic music to the community. I love how enthusiastic and appreciative our audiences are, and seeing people of all ages and backgrounds coming to enjoy the concerts.”
What is one piece of advice you would give to an aspiring musician?
“It would make me very happy to know that someone enjoyed their experience at the symphony enough to want to contribute to help us thrive into the future and provide music to the community for many years to come. I would also be flattered that someone noticed me, way at the back of the string section!”
