Cathrine Baker,

Fulte, Principal

How old were you when you started playing your instrument?

“I first began playing the flute in the summer after second grade! I have no recollection of why I wanted to play the flute. It's quite peculiar because nobody in my family is a musician and nobody else was pushing me to make music, but something inside of me said: That looks fun!”

Besides the Bakersfield Symphony, what else do you do for a living?

“I am established in Los Angeles as a versatile artist with projects spanning orchestral performance, studio recording, chamber music, and education. I wear many hats! I hold the Principal Flute Chair in Orchestra Santa Monica. At the same time, also perform with other groups in the area, including the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pacific Symphony, Hollywood Chamber Orchestra, Modesto Symphony, Muse-ique, Riverside Philharmonic, San Bernardino Symphony, Santa Barbara Symphony, and Redlands Symphony.

I teach many flutists in my own home studio and through the YOLA program with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.”

What do you enjoy most about playing with the BSO?

“I absolutely love the fact that I get to come and make music with my friends to share music with the Bakersfield community.”

What is one piece of advice you would give to an aspiring musician?

“I have been a member of this orchestra since 2019, and I have seen the group grow exponentially since then. It has really been miraculous. To have my chair sponsored would mean so much to me so that I can continue to make music at a high level in this wonderful group!”
