Aija Mattson-Jovel,

Principal

French Horn

How old were you when you started playing your instrument?

“I started playing my instrument in the 6th grade in my band class at school.”

Besides the Bakersfield Symphony, what else do you do for a living?

“I am a professional musician. I play French horn all over Southern California, from playing in different orchestras (such as the Bakersfield Symphony as your principal horn), to chamber groups such as a brass quintet, or recording a score for a motion picture/TV show/project in Los Angeles. I also teach French horn privately.”

What do you enjoy most about playing with the BSO?

“I really enjoy the musicians I get to play with in the BSO. It’s nice to chat with the musicians on breaks and to make great music together. I also really enjoy getting to see smiling audience members and getting to interact with them.”

What is one piece of advice you would give to an aspiring musician?

“My advice is always to try to enjoy the process of becoming and building your career as a musician. Every moment of your career can teach you so much about being present in the moment and being patient with the process. It's more about the journey than the destination. ”
